The Good News Things are Not Always as they Appear! Kevin Mortimer, Middle River Friends Church Having been invited to participate at a large conference on the east coast, I was sitting across the dinner table from a gentleman wearing a green army cap. As we sat, I noticed that he was straining to read my nametag. Not one to turn down the opportunity for good conversation, I introduced myself as Kevin from Iowa. As we shared in- troductory remarks about where we were from; in a mo- ment of energy I asked, so Ted, what is your growing edge? What is new in your life? Ted stammered for a short mo- ment and then came out with "well you probably can't tell, but though I look like a man I used to be a woman." Uhhh, so I said, what do you do for a living? Criminal Justice. Ted said. I'm having a tough time getting a job in the field because once they review my resume' they generally don't give me a second interview. I'm working presently as a social worker. And so my relationship began with Ted. "Missing the mark" of God's standard has been my re- turning understanding sin. The reality that by my own volition I make choices that separate me from God's holi- ness (wholeness) makes sense. Much of my life has been about hiding the lawless activity that manifests itself in my heart. Pride, greed, envy, and self-righteousness have been activities that God has worked and still works out of me. But there has always been a sense that these really didn't count when I heard others sharing stories of forni- cation, adultery, murder, slandering, theft and the like. My feeling was that my life was pretty boring and really didn't have alot to contribute to the larger story. My feel- ing has changed. Forgiveness is God's gift to us. It's not an empty gift, but one that come's at an arm & leg type of price. It's a real gift and a complete gift. Confession is the activity of get- ting the "junk" out of our lives so that God can restore and fill us with his healing Spirit. Restoration is a life time process and is available to all. Some would like to say that permissiveness is the better way, but God's way is love. What I've noticed is that God gets his way, and I'm thank- ful! Liberation from sin is the greatest gift. It's a gift that I refuse to give up! It's too precious. As the week went on, I returned from haying taken a three mile run and happened to pass Ted on the way into the dormatory. "How was your run?" Ted asked. "Great," I said with a smile, "thanks for asking!" It's great to know the freedom that comes with God's forgiveness and love. The CAHS Apple Dumpling Gang is Gettin' Ready to Ride Again!
